Won't be as funny if somebody lets a dirty bomb go sometime and a radiation shelter becomes worth its weight in gold. Wish I had an old one in my back yard. I don't even have a basement.
For whatever unfathomable reason, the Left destroyed our early Civil Defense programs. Any concept or information that even implied that one could survive a nuclear war was leaped on and torn apart in a fury. Or otherwise made into some big "duck and cover" joke. What the funny boys didn't realize is that "duck and cover" could save your eyes and maybe your life if there was a bomb hit some distance off. Finally, everyone having been convinced that the only thing to do in the event of an attack was stand out in your driveway and die (like in the movie "Testament") Civil Defense in America died out. Not so in many other countries, both Communist and free, which continued intensive civil defense programs and shelter construction.
I dare say few people know what they should do if they are in the path of a radiation cloud, either from an attack, or from a nuclear accident. The resulting unnecessary deaths could probably be laid directly at the door of the 1960s anti-war movement.
