The quotes Tom provided represent the lunatic fringe of the environmental movement. However, don't overlook the possibility for a lunatic fringe to do a lot of damage.
I watched an author being interviewed on a news program last week who provided a good example. Back in the early 1980s, some of the Rashnisch (sp) movement actually went around Oregon spreading salmenalla trying to make people sick. They did this for weeks and did manage to infect a lot of people. The source of the infections was never known until the group confessed about a year later.
Back around 1995, a Japanese cult released nerve gas in the subway system, killing some people and sickening many others.
And never forget how a small number of lunatics blew up that federal building in Oklahoma City, killing about 168 people. It's easy to argue that Osama bin Laden's bunch represent the lunatic fringe of Islam. They've managed to kill thousands of people. Just because a group's numbers are small doesn't mean they are harmless. Given dedication and even fairly modest resources, they can cause a lot of damage.
