We KNOW Saddam was trying to build nukes before the Israelis blew up his reactor. We KNOW Saddam was trying to build nukes before the Gulf War flattened his country and set him back again.
Can you give me any plausible reason why he would not be trying to build nukes given any opportunity to do so? Do you have the slightest doubt that if we all went home and left him alone for ten years that he would not have his very own set of warheads at the end of that time?
And I'm not even talking about biologicals and nerve agents.
The inspection program has as much real-world significance as trying to eliminate termites from your house by going through the rooms with a flyswatter. When the nation being inspected has has years to hide something, and every incentive not to cooperate, it is utterly impossible for a team of several dozen inspectors to prove that an area the size of California does NOT contain something, unless we are talking hydroelectric dams or football stadiums, and the very concept of "inspection" was a joke to start with.
