My son is a surgical tech instructor, so the odds are against him being deployed. It makes sense in a way - as an individual, he can only work on one case at a time. As an instructor, he can train many students who can each work on one case at a time. He did say that he's preparing for training his students on a wartime footing where 3 months of school gets compressed into 1 month.
A lot of corpsmen are being shipped out, so those remaining behind are having to carry the load. He's working with the area military hospitals to loan out his students for on the job training under controlled conditions.
My son is trained to work as a field medic with the Marines. He can also be stationed on a hospital ship like the USS Comfort or USS Mercy. While the odds may be against him being deployed, he's packing his sea bag just in case.
