What a steaming pile!

Comments interspersed:

One - If you remember the '60s, you weren't there. Some of us remember parts of it, the tours arranged by our Uncle Sugar, pretty well. But those had an intensity unrelieved by "Better Living Through Chemistry".

Contrary to popular belief not everyone was on drugs during the sixties. Some folks were busy raising kids and were not "tuning in to tune out." Tours arranged by Uncle Sugar were courtesy of LBJ. Goldwater, that warmongerer, wanted to dump the draft and have a fighting force like we have today. When republican Goldwater proposed dumping the draft, such an idea was rejected as evil - when democrat Carter proposes it, it's genius. I have a hard time reconciling the nuances of why that was so.

Two - If you weren't arrested, you weren't there. Getting arrested was a rite of passage, like getting your draft card, graduating from college, getting drunk and vomiting all over your girlfriends fathers car on the way home. Just something that happened. You could figure on being arrested about 1 incident in 4, if you were more active and managed to get trapped.

Yeah, if you were between 18-24 during the years 1966-1970, and you hung out with the wrong types of folks and got caught up in the "revolution" and had enough time on your hands to protest the war, the fuzz and the moonshot, you would likely be arrested. If Bennies and LSD were the only roommates one knew the names of, and if you had no job - heck ya - then you were vomiting all over your girlfriend's fathers car.

A lot of folks, the "Squares," didn't touch drugs or protest jack-squat. Another group of older "Squares" - the parents of the "revolutionarys" were just lushes who hung around the bars after work and around their in-house bar at home. Wanna-be rat-packers, they would be wasted by the time they came home and couldn't care where their kids were - or just scream at them in a drunken rage - pushing them into the arms of the leftist movement.

The kids on these boards don't seem to be far enough away from a keyboard to get arrested, don't have convictions enough to get arrested, and couldn't handle it if they did. (Justin is an exception.)

In case you missed it - the average age of the posters here is probably 39-42. Who is exactly a kid? And what sort of perverse logic sees an arrest record as a badge of honor? Do you apply that same standard to Bush and his DUI? Protesting takes lots of forms - standing in a street with a sign is positively medieval.

If I want to change opinions I write to the papers and to people who are in a position to change things. Not stand around shouting like an ass holding a placard for the yokels to gape at hoping folks are gonna say, "Golly gee a lot of people think (insert protester view), well I'm going to change my opinion because of these folks screaming and chanting."

Jeez, all that protesting in the sixties did jack-squat! Protesters were puppets of all the communist remnants who exploited the kids who came from dysfunctional families and turned them against the "establishment." Only Nixon ended the war - certainly not due to any protests - and he was popular as heck with the older squares and regular folks prior to Watergate.

By the time the eighties rolled in - all these protesters had long since been embarassed by their youthful indiscretions and were happy capitalists riding the stocks and buying Apple Computers, eating Haagen Daz gourmet ice cream and clicking on those keyboards.

(Given the size of their mouths, it would be interesting to see them when they found out where else the proper authorities can find to search. Surprise, surprise!! Nope, they couldn't handle it.)

Strip searches, full cavity searches and the like can be avoided by avoiding doing things which are illegal and acting like a "hooligan." (& avoiding traveling through european airports)

Some of the "revolutionaries" never grew up. In stead of realizing how they were manipulated puppets of certain savvy groups - they cling to youthful, sound-bite views of an "establishment" and an "evil-capitalist" society made up of old, white, rich people whose only thought in life is to oppress them, keep them poor and miserable. When the reality is - almost no one on earth cares about others more than they do about themselves. There is no establishment - ther never was - only people living life as best they could.

I could write a book about the links between the communist agitators and the hippie protesters who were exploited by them and took a whole generation out of circulation for a seven or eight years.

The same thing is going on with the protesters of today: A bunch of kids and old kids who never grew up.
