A followup on this thread, where I put forth the proposition that most of the opposition to a war on Iraq is about opposing Bush, not the war.

Another article on the same subject drives home the point, including similar wistful memories of Clinton, the man who would always tell them what they wanted to hear, whether he meant it or not. The article reveals a lot more of the motivations behind the opposition than they probably would like.

...In interviews, German and French officials acknowledge that Mr. Bush's goal — the disarmament of Iraq and ouster of Mr. Hussein — would be best in an ideal world. In the next breath, though, they argue that for now, the containment of Mr. Hussein's power — with inspectors keeping the Iraqi leader off balance for months — is a perfectly acceptable second choice.

"OFF-BALANCE?" Great, now I have to clean coffee out of the keyboard again. Yeah, those inspectors are just running rings around Saddam, aren't they.
