Real sand is hard to beat. Memories of the beach are pleasant.

I would bet that a buckwheat mattress (might be too noisy) or an air bead (Sobakawa) mattress would be dynamite.

I am somewhat intimidated by metal appliances. Jody, you would have to tie me up and give me strict instructions.
