Sometimes you just sit there with your mouth hanging open...

As Hans Blix comes running back, waving yet another Chamberlain-style piece of paper.

Check this out:

...Iraq also promised to move swiftly to adopt national legislation banning all weapons of mass destruction, the ambassador, Mohammed A. Aldouri, said.

Oh. Well. I guess that settles that whole issue, doesn't it? This is so bizarre on so many levels, I don't even know where to start. Are there people out there who might actually be impressed by this? My God, does ANYONE buy this shit? Does Blix?

And while the agreement for overflights has gotten big press, the little caveat that accompanies it has not gotten quite as much coverage:

Iraq said Monday it would allow the United Nations to use American U-2 spy planes for aerial surveillance without conditions -- but shortly after, Saddam Hussein said coalition forces patrolling the "no-fly" zones should not launch raids on Iraq during the U-2 surveillance flights.

This demand is also odd on several levels. The fact that Iraq is shooting at patrol planes in the no-fly zone at all is a gross violation of their agreements and U.N. resolutions. Their justification for this, that the U-2s could target antiaircraft sites, makes no sense to me. Most antiaircraft sites are self-targeted when they paint a U.S. or British aircraft.

Other disturbing, but expected news:

Saddam wrapping civilians around military targets.

This technique is having the expected results:

Coalition aircraft strike Iraqi surface-to-air missile system. Iraq says two civilians were killed and nine others wounded.

Of course, one could always assume that a dozen civilians just happened to be wandering around a surface-to-air missile installation. Maybe they were just there to ask directions.
