Peace protestors, French duplicity, UN hypocrisy, the Turk's fishing for increased financial aid are all part of the "process". However imagine for a moment a more rational world, admittedly a fantasy world. Imagine that Saddam was confronted with monolithic opposition where the whole world was saying "free the Iraqi people and rid yourself of WMDs". Now Saddam would probably still oppose the world because he's a psychopath. However his henchmen would know they had no escape and would ultimately hang with Saddam. Under this scenario, Iraq would almost certainly have a revolt against Saddam and the US could achieve its objectives without losing a single soldier. Unfortunately this happy scenario is fantasy. Several American soldiers are going to die because the French want a bigger piece of the pie and the peace protestors want a "warm and fuzzy feeling".
There will need to be some adjustments to the process after the US is finished with Iraq.
