Better the Russians than the French

The U.S. has crossed the Rubicon. The only way we're not going to war is if the Iraqis get rid of Saddam on their own (not likely). The U.S. would probably already be at war if it weren't for the Turks stalling for more cash (the Turks are pacing this thing and not the U.N.).

What's happening to the U.N. is regrettable. If the Russians invoke their veto then it would cause less damage than if the French did it. If the French veto the resolution then the U.N. will probably go the way of the League of Nations. I find myself wondering why the United States pursued this thing with the U.N. to the point of the French vetoing the resolution and compromising the insitutuion. I guess because we don't want to compromise Prime Minister Blair. However the longer this thing drags out, the more Blair's position is eroded within the Labour Party. I'm reminded of Bismark's comments about politics and the making of sausages.
