Not sure what can be done beyond constant moderation. I really don't know why it tapered off on the Word Press HZ. Did Robert code something? Limiting names that had numbers? I don't know.
What is interesting is we did not really have this problem on the Zone That Was. Before HZ-Tiki-Wiki. When we jumped ship, and required registration to get on board, the weirdness began. It was relentless with the spam registrations. I followed the IP's and they were from everywhere.
I have no solution. Just observation. And a whole lot of over thinking.
