"A lot of people are psychologically incapable of believing that George W. Bush could be intelligent."
Well, yeah... Include empirical thinkers in that bunch. A lot of us have a hard time calling a spade a fork or a hawk a handsaw. Face it, Dubyuh acts as dumb as a brineshrimp. And if it is an act, it has gotten him and the US nowhere at all, so its a very dumb strategy if it is all a sham.
"Or that any person with intelligence could be conservative."
Nope. Plenty of smart conservatives. An interesting thing about smart people... they have been around as long as Homo Sapiens Sapiens (and possibly before)... around 100,000 years at least... But we did not have the wheel for at least 94,000-96,000 of those years. So that smart people miss the obvious or are not smart enough to see the truth should not surprise anyone.
" The idea that any thinking person could reject liberalism opens too many uncomfortable holes in their worldview."
I assure you, I am quite comfortable with it. If I had .25 for every smart and wrong person I had met, I would be very wealthy.
