Some views from the streets of Baghdad

Interesting article from SFGate.com:

"The future will be better," Aziz said. "I think our government will give more democracy." When pressed whether that would happen under Saddam Hussein or under a U.S.-dominated regime, he demurred and changed the subject.

But one man pulled aside a reporter. "Don't believe anything anyone says here, because we all know that your translator is a government spy," he said. "We'll only say good things about Saddam to you. But 90 percent of us want Saddam to go. We'll cheer the Americans if they come and get rid of him."

Looking nervously around him, he continued: "We want all these regime people to be killed."

While Iraqis seem to be making few preparations for war, the international community in Baghdad is taking no chances.

The United Nations has reduced its civilian staff from 900 to about 100 in the past week and has reduced the number of weapons inspectors from about 250 to 50. A chartered jetliner is parked at Baghdad's Saddam International Airport, waiting to evacuate the remaining staff whenever they get the word.

Germany and Spain called on their citizens Friday to leave Iraq, and nearly the entire diplomatic corps has pulled out.

"Only the French and German ambassadors are still here, because of course their governments can't be seen to be giving up on this Security Council business," said one international official. "They're in their embassies alone, sitting on top of their packed suitcases, waiting to be allowed to leave."
