<So your alternative to consensus is one or some states who know what the right thing to do is. And you imply that America is the one that will have this divine knowledge, and should be the one in the world to make these decisions.
America and its leaders are anything but "divine." And of course, just because America is making a decision, doesn't automatically make it right. Just like an individual has no guarantee he is making the right decision when he is making it. But when it comes down to it, it's up to an individual to make decisions based on his own knowledge and values, and whether the decision ends up being right or not, getting five other people to agree with him won't change that end result one bit.
The United Nations is currently much more corrupt as an institution than the American government (including all of it, Congress, Administration, courts, Democrats, Republicans). And I fail to see the value of trying to get a moral sanction from them.
