I am getting, from widely varied sources, the impression that the area under Baghdad is a warren of bunkers and tunnels in which Saddam and his goons are probably squirreled away right now.
We just laid our first bunkerbuster on something tonight.
My big worry...the obvious thing to do if one is building underground retreats is to build a back door somewhere. Is our military anticipating Saddam (or whoever) popping out of a hole somewhere far beyond the outskirts of Baghdad? It goes without saying that they can probably move from one bunker to the next through underground connectors. The Arabs are red hot tunnelers...even under primitive conditions, they have dug long underground aquifers. Heck, there may even be tunnels connecting towns!
I hear we are getting some good info on some of this from the original contractors and others, but Saddam would have thought of that too, and I doubt any single contractor worked on more than a part of the system.
I wonder if there is the equivalent of the Vietnam tunnel rats waiting outside Baghdad who are going to have to dive into this maze at the end.
