Civilians under fire by Iraqi paramilitary forces

This really underscores the fact that this conflict isn't really between the Coalition military and the Iraqi military, but rather the Coalition military and the Iraqi political regime. Saddam's greatest weapon is his wily ability to operate a massive police state, effectively terrorizing the Iraqi conscripts and the Iraqi population into silence and obedience. But at some point in the next couple weeks the balance will tip, as the inevitable fate of the regime becomes clearer and clearer to the Iraqis. Until this happens they will fear Saddam more than they fear us.

The only thing we may have underestimated going into this war wasn't Iraqi military capabilities, but the degree of sophistication in Saddam's terror state, its creative approach to underhanded terror tactics, its extremely brutal effectiveness and stubborn refusal to quickly die. But it really won't matter much in the end. The advantages of Coalition power are so huge in this conflict that the outcome is prdetermined, no matter what tricks an evil dictator pulls to draw things out.
