I heard a report that the car was full of gasoline (not just the fuel tank). If it had hit other places it could have done a lot of damage. Pretty cheap bomb.
Cars don't normally explode into flames in a crash, even horrific ones, except in Hollywood where FX guys go to great lengths to ensure that they do.
Maybe it was a Pinto.
