Just discussing Iraq with a co-worker this morning and he came up with an idea that seems at least somewhat possible...
The "battles" in Iraq so far, despite media pictues of exploding tanks and marines firing machine guns, seem to have been relatively easy. There have been coalition casualties, as well as Iraqi military and civilian deaths, all of which are tragic, but I would have expected it to be a lot worse.
There have been no major bridges or dams or oil wells blown up by Iraqi forces, no real evidence of WMD has been found and they certainly haven't been used.
Resistance almost seems to be token so far, at least compared to what some analysts predicted and what was at least somewhat reasonable to expect, given the size of the Iraqi army/RG.
What if... Saddam actually did destroy all the WMD (or moved them out of Iraq)? What if he is in some safe place in Syria or somewhere, sending out his tapes etc? How will it look to the world if the US forces over-run Iraq and find no WMD, no Al Qaida strongholds in Saddam-controlled areas, no nothing?
Saddam could sit back and trumpet that the US had invaded his soverign nation with no justification, that he was now legally a government in exile, that the country had been ravaged by the invaders, civilians had been murdered, soldiers only defending thier country had been slaughtered.
Could this be his diabolical master plan? It would explain some things....
Idle speculation
