Geek Speak » in reply to Days of the spinning hard drive are numbered

Unintended consequences.

Well, I'm impressed with a solid state HD, and love the SD disks for pictures and memory in general. And even though the interface on those things is the same as a spinning HD, I'd bet it won't be for long.

I know people who have stored date on the 360 K floppy disc, which was truly floppy. For the grandkids. And on with the other floppy drives, CDs and DVDs.

Over time I'll bet that much of our current data storage will be unreadable as technology progresses. I'm aware that a person could continually update everything, but those discs in Grandma and Grandpa's safe deposit box or stack of photos being saved for their great-grandchildren won't be. And rather than bother to find someone who can extract the data they'll be thrown out.

Print seems to be the only sure-fire enduring way to store data and keep it useful. I have to admit I find that fascinating.
