I haven't researched these, but I assume a big selling point is to have the "solid state" part be completely transparent to the operating systems, addressing it no differently than a normal hard disk, with the same power and data connectors.
Reliability is an interesting issue. How stable is the data compared to magnetic state-of-the-art? I've always wondered, given how small you can make both chips and hard drives now, why someone didn't come out with a drive that fits in a standard slot that contains its own RAID setup (multiple miniature disks with individual motors and read heads). Certainly this would be much more feasible with solid state drives as the chips get smaller.
