I haven't seen Rumsfeld being crabby. I think Rumsfeld can manage to be so intense, because he enjoys his job and can maintain a sense of humor. As far as being rude, I think Rumsfeld could tone it down a bit to reporters from a culture he is less familar with- I think if he can't make them laugh, then he should, as a rule, be more reserved.
