Interesting...2 new polls show Lieberman establishing a lead in the Dem 2004 race

(hypothetical Presidential matchups are totally meaningless at this early stage, but internal Democratic polling is actually pretty important, as candidates who'll need to recruit thousands of volunteers nationwide must show soon that they're serious contenders)

Ladies and gentlemen, we may have a "frontrunner" for the Democratic nomination.

Gallup

Lieberman - 23%
Kerry - 17%
Gephardt - 15%

ABC News - Washington Post

Lieberman - 29%
Gephardt - 19%
Kerry - 14%

Several observations from the polling:

At this point in time national security issues are just as important in the minds of American voters as economics.

Kerry is slightly ahead of Lieberman among Democratic activists; Lieberman is much more popular among Democrat-leaning voters and the general public.

Lieberman has a big lead among younger Democrats (age 19-49); Kerry has a slight lead among older Dems.

Gephardt is strong in the Midwest but weak elsewhere.

And Edwards? Has some strength in the South but not elsewhere. Below 10% nationally.
