I am no economist (so does that mean you do or don't trust me?), but I would like to see income tax eliminated for a 'consumption' at-the-register sales tax.
The best reasons for this are:
1) Fine-Grain regional Stimulation: Wouldn't it have been nice to cut the "taxes" of everyone living in Detroit during the Auto Crunch? Would have stimulated their local economy and MAYBE have prevented or reduced the "rust belt" rot.... Saved a few communities...
2) Market stimulus:
Suppose heavy manufacturing is in a spiriling slump, you could cut the consumption tax on cars.
3) Fairness
Everyone pays a per-purchase-per-dollar rate that is the same for everyone in his-or-her community.
4) Investment
Income no longer taxed, means return from investment is no longer taxed- and results in more incentive to invest.
5) Smaller government
Fewer high-power IRS turds knowing everything about what you make and how you spend your money.
6) Protect the Poor in a way "more fair" to the rich (like I really care... but)
Food, shelter and clothing are not taxed. Everybody reaps the benefit of the break, but it means those so poor they can only afford food, shelter and clothing don't have to pay taxes.

This seems even more fair to me.
