While Abu Mazen must speak a voice of moderation to maintain relevence with the U.S., Arafat is now free to pander to more militant Palestinians and move public sentiment away from compromise. He is deliberately making it impossible for Abu Mazen to function.
The Israelis could help Mr. Abu Mazen by arresting and sequestering Mr. Arafat for his role in supporting the intifada. Sometimes turning off the microphone i the only thing left to do.
