Robinson Crusoe on Mars, released, interestingly enough, in 1964. Hardly a blockbuster - in fact, hardly known at all save to afficionados of Saturday afternoon TV "SciFi Theater" matinees. But, even though filmed before the Mariner photos came back, it portrays a desert Mars, Earthlike only in the convenience of atmospheric pressure (and they do give a nod to insufficient oxygen).
No idea if it made budget, but productions costs must've been held down by shooting in Death Valley with a cast of only three actors, and borrowing (matting in) George Pal's version of the "Martian tripod machines" from his 1953 classic War of theWorlds.
