Hi Marcia...
Frank was having a somewhat different problem. It seems like the advice from Tom sorted things out for you. I tried to design everything to fit into the second-smallest computer screen around, 800x600. It's a tight fit, but I think it squeaks by.
Glad you like the new logo--thanks! It's a montage--the Earth is from a Shuttle photo, and the sunset came from another. I did a little stretching and warping and rotating to make the curvature of the sunrise (or sunset, who knows?) match, and exaggerated the rays with a smear tool. The source images were very high resolution digital stills, and so I had lots of room to play with--the final graphic is shrunk quite a bit, to something like 25%, and that hides a multitude of sins!
There are times when it looks less like a sunrise/set than it does a nuclear or asteroid impact blast. I think that's because the sun illuminates a broad swath of limb, while visualizations of a nuclear/asteroid blast I've seen portray it as a point source, like here. Oh well...probably shouldn't have mentioned it, now people will see it that way too.
The general idea is very close to what you and Justin developed for the original, and all through this "redesign" my basic rule was to preserve the sense of the original while doing what are really just technical upgrades to the graphics. Which is why I'll defer the question of modifying the text at the top of the page to Justin. That's his, word for word, and it's so familiar that it's become his signature in a way. I'd tread lightly on changing it!
