My microphone doesn't work

My microphone doesn't work any more. Actually it's been a long time since I've used it, but something came up and I wanted to use it. I have checked all the settings I can find in the sound control panels and can't find anything wrong. . All of the other sound functions on the computer work fine. It's just my microphone that doesn't work. The mic is selected and all the proper volume controls are turned up. I bought a new microphone. I downloaded the latest sound drivers for my motherboard. I checked the BIOS and don't see anything wrong. My motherboard is an MS-6330. The sound circuits are part of the motherboard. I am considering installing a separate sound card and disabling the motherboard circuits. Does anybody have any other suggestions? And yes it's plugged into the correct socket. It does not have an on/off switch. I wish it were something as simple as that. It may be, but I haven't thought of it yet.
