Damned if you do damned if you don't

Not only the US gets zinged....

Guadalcanal is in chaos. There is less law and order with each passing month. Australia and New Zealand, the wealthiest and most powerful nations in the region, are considering what action to take. It's estimated that Guadalcanal requires at least $40 million a year for ten years to restore infrastructure and the economy. But this will only work if law and order are restored. To do this, Australia are considering sending troops and police to do the job. But this would, in effect, turn Guadalcanal into a colony. Many of the people of Guadalcanal are not opposed to this, as the old timers remember the colonial period as one of peace and prosperity. If nothing else, the colonial powers prevented the ethnic fighting and government corruption that now curse the island. By not intervening, Australia and New Zealand are accused of not helping a neighbor. But intervention will bring accusations of neo-colonialism and large bills for what could turn out to be an expensive and lengthily process.

New Zealand already has ten policemen on Guadalcanal training local police. But these New Zealanders report that the factionalism and growth of warlord culture has made any local police force a losing proposition. But a force of 150 Australian and New Zealand police could probably return order to the country.
