Tom beat me to main reason not to do that. Another is that it wouldn't provide the authentication you implied, because anybody could type any user name and have it remembered in a cookie. That sort of protection will have to await a formal membership system.
Still, I could add the option easily enough, turned off by default, and let you turn it on in the Settings window. I'll probably do that, fairly soon.
