Maybe this is cultural.
I grew up in the Midwest, not that much later than your childhood, and never saw a true string-spun top, much less played top games. Nobody I knew played marbles either, like you see in old movies. The pump tops were common, and there were also tops that kind of had a string built in that you pulled, it snapped back into the top, and you let go of it.
