I expect this will all go away soon
This French thing probably has a short shelf life.
It is not hard to push Americans over the line re France because anyone who has traveled to France or been around French tourists have experienced the famous rudeness. We have our own NYC type rudeness and alone the rudeness it is not a deal breaker.
I might ask you (because I really don't know), how US exchange students are received in France and how difficult is it to find host families.
