Hah! I NAILED it, dammit!
Capitol Hill Blue has just printed a retraction and explanation about the Terrance J. Wilkinson quote that featured in the thread below.
Lindy quoted the original CHB story (which has already been altered):
"The report had already been discredited," said Terrance J. Wilkinson, a CIA advisor present at two White House briefings. "This point was clearly made when the President was in the room during at least two of the briefings."
Bush's response was anger, Wilkinson said.
"He said that if the current operatives working for the CIA couldn't prove the story was true, then the agency had better find some who could," Wilkinson said. "He said he knew the story was true and so would the world after American troops secured the country."
Lindy cannot be blamed. It was a quote from a legitimate-looking story. But I have a habit of running a Google on anyone who pops up in something controversial...it's good to know what else he has said, or what he might be associated with.
I got nothing. Under any reasonable spelling of Terrance Wilkinson, with or without the "J." Not one entry. I saw that as damn suspicious for anyone in public office, or someone who would be allowed to attend Presidential briefings. In fact, although I didn't say as much, I suspected he was a fake, and I was proven right.
Credit to Capitol Hill Blue for its quick mea culpa and detailed explanation. This makes it an honest mistake on their part, and not a lie. It can happen to any journalist. It happened to me.
Ten bucks says the quote still ends up permanently on dozens of leftist web sites. We'll see.
Now the $64,000 question:
How many OTHER news organizations have been using "Wilkinson" as one of their anonymous intelligence agency sources? How many others are there like him?
