re: Reasonable

What feelings do you get when you see the "bent nodes", the "exploded cell walls", the "twisted seed heads", the meteoritic magnetites,..............does it make you shudder?
Does your brain have trouble even wrapping around the concept that this IS happening?
And how does that make you feel?

Doesn't exactly fit into your view of the world?

The entire progress of science throughout history consists of investigating phenomena which do not fit into the current view of the world.

The difference is that a real scientist tries to restrain his speculations and keep them within the bounds of reality. This is what separates them from uneducated and inexperienced people.

When you see a circle of mushrooms appear overnight in the grassy lawn do you assume:

1.) That it is due to a phenomenon which is common and, in modern times, understood

2.) There is some botanical reason for this, you just need to find out what it is (what a reasonable person uneducated in botany might conclude)

3.) Pixies danced there last night

If you were a peasant in the Middle Ages, you might be excused for the third conclusion, just like one might conclude that thunder and lightning were caused by Thor's hammer. A scientist, even in the Middle Ages, would come to the second conclusion.

When a scientist many years ago found film in a dark drawer that had never been exposed to light, that had odd patterns of fogging on them when developed, did he assume:

1) That there was some unexplained physical reason for this (it was later found to be from mildly radioactive rocks placed on the film packages)

2) That these were ectoplasmic emanations from some supernatural force (an explanation for many odd things on film nowadays).

I am not a botanist. I am not qualified to comment in detail on the deformations in the plants. I know it is impossible for a plant to instantly develop a growth deformation overnight. I do know that meteoric material is common in soil around the world, and in any case, could be planted. I do know that hoaxers have constructed circles of unbelievable complexity, and have done so without leaving detectable tracks.

I do know that just because I find a trampled path across my cornfield in Ohio, that it is not reasonable to conclude that it was caused by stampeding elephants. I do know that the odd light in the sky is probably something other than a spaceship from another galaxy. That the ripple in my lake is probably not a plesiosaur. That brownies are not responsible for the mysterious disappearance of my car keys.

The world would be a much more interesting place if fairy circles WERE created by dancing pixies, but you have to start with some parameters.

There is no rational reason to assume that a vast, supernatural force or alien intelligence would for some reason decide to manifest itself by drawing incomprehensible pictures in a farmer's wheat. There is no rational reason to assume that a secret military project would reveal itself by drawing pictures in a farmer's wheat.

Occam's Razor states that the crop circles are almost certainly manmade, and that the plant phenomena have a natural explanation, at least part of which is the intense desire to prove their case by crop circle "experts" who not only see a source of revenue threatened, but every last ounce of their credibility. I have only their word on controls and other methods of eliminating alternate explanations.

I don't have to tell you "how it was done." I can't. But I can tell you with a lot of certainty how it was NOT done.
