Root cause of the problem being US media printing rumors and not carefully saying that they were printing rumors. The rumor frenzy went exponential. Add to that the sensationalist BBC claims, later refuted that "blank ammo" was used, the rescue was "staged", etc.
What's missing in the picture is the ultimate responsibility for the fuster cluck that led to the non-combatents driving in the wrong direction into harm's way.
