And I don't buy too much in the way of farm equipment, industrial equipment or aircraft components. My car parts and tires come from Japan.

You do see a lot of stuff manufactured here, after all, this is a big country with the biggest economy in the world. But they often tend to be consumables, stuff like household detergents, that sort of thing. They are made for local use, not for export. Like I said, clothes and shoes are pretty fundamental items. Except for specialty items, they are mostly made overseas. Even those patriotic "These Colors Don't Run" bumper stickers are made in China. I know, I saw one on a car the other day, the flag and the slogan were faded by the sun, but the tiny message "Made in China" was in a much more durable ink. I wonder if that was deliberate...

BTW, that article you posted was three and a half years old.
