T'was Mars
The Moon has just passed by Mars. The apparent movement of the "spot" was actually the Moon moving the other way.
I saw a similar magnificent 3/4 Moon tonight, with Mars about 5 degrees above it in the sky. Over the next few nights the Moon will rise later and will be less close so mars will be clearer.
