re: Well . . .

Depleted uranium munitions were apparently used in Desert Storm, and the casualty figures seem about right, considering the number exposed. According to the National Gulf War Resource Center, Inc.:

"436,000 entered into or lived for months within areas contaminated by more than 315 tons of depleted uranium radioactive toxic waste possibly laced with trace amounts of highly radioactive Plutonium and Neptunium, almost all without any awareness, training, protective equipment, or medical evaluations ..."

Those who would sustain the greatest risk would, of course, be the actual weapons and munitions handlers. Direct contact is hazardous. Even the old lenzatic compass the Infantry probably still uses today is built into a lead-laced body with a rad warning label due to its radium dial.

Out of control, though? No more than before, when we tested nukes against actual American troops in the field. No more so than when troops removed shirts in the heat of the Vietnam jungles to handle bags of rainbow defoliants.

About par for the course,
Dan
