It sounds like they tried to capture them alive...(The reports I heard had our troops inside the building before shots were fired.)
I assume they were going in to capture rather than kill...If killing was the goal, then why send the troops into the building?
Just surround it and torch it.
(In fact that might have resulted in a surrender too...To bad we don't have flame thrower's any more...Its amazing how fire can make even a suicidal maniac hell bent on not being captured run out the front door with arms in air)
