I had GI Bill, a public university to attend, work-study programs in college, FHA and VA loans for both my home and my parent's. I also had minimum wage-guaranteed jobs till I learned a trade, and worked for a lot of private firms working on government defense contracts. And of course, an oil company.

Then I spent close to 20 years working for municipal governments, and retired early on Social Security and the Florida Retirement System. The VA provided my medical insurance until Medicare kicks in next month.

If it wasn't for the welfare state, I'd probably be working for someone like you right now, TB. If I had a job at all.
