Europe funds rovers
Maybe ESA might have manned Mars flight "religion", but infering that the European public supports anything more than rovers and probes is not really justifiied.
Factually, the return of real data on the real Mars has always led to even less public demend to pay for manned flight there. The consequence is that those trying to corner NASA into taking up this goal are actually leading NASA into a dead end,
