Space solar power

Has this notion ever been examined?
I was wondering whether there was an orbit that would let a satellite appear to track back from west to east once a day when viewed from the ground. This would allow a simple mirror satellite to reflect light onto a pre-existing earth based solar mirror farm or solar cell array at night to power them to return to their east pointing position for the morning sun, and possibly have some surplus. Would such an orbit be so close as to be in earth's shadow for too long to be workable? It might be enough to make a solar cell farm profitable.

The Russians toyed with the idea of space mirrors to help light dark areas in the winter, but I am not sure if they are still pursuing the concept.
