It's probably fortunate that Democrats hang onto power like a wolverine, and would rather die than leave office, otherwise an obvious move would occur to them:

If Davis resigned, I assume the Lt. Governor (Bustamante) would automatically become governor, and since Davis would no longer be in office, I also assume the entire recall effort would go up in a puff of smoke.

Democrats get to keep the governorship, and the Republicans are standing with their jaws hanging open.

Again, it's fortunate for Republicans that Democrats like Davis care more about their personal power than about their party.
