The police chief said the three men were members of a resurgent extremist group called Afghan Nation, an umbrella organization for a number of factions he said were linked to the Taliban and al-Qaeda. "These factions are all working under the umbrella of Afghan Nation," he said. "What these guys want is terrorism ... they want to make as much trouble between the ethnic groups as they can and destabilize our country."

Canadian troops who have just begun patrolling the volatile western half of the Afghan capital may have narrowly missed becoming the targets of a car bomb, a senior Afghan police official said yesterday.
Gen. Abdul Qudus Omed, the chief of police for Police District 3, which falls within the Canadian sector, said a car bomb that exploded prematurely in a Kabul neighbourhood last week, killing two Afghans who were assembling it, was to be used against a Canadian patrol.
The information, he said, came from a third bomb-maker who survived the explosion and told police that the trio were constructing one or more car bombs to attack "the slaves of the UN and the foreign invaders."
"They call us all slaves of the United Nations," said Gen. Omed, speaking through an interpreter. "The main aim of the bomb, the target, was either you or me -- meaning the Afghan police and ISAF."
