Democrats vs. democracy

In a state struggling to make ends meet, the state will have spent millions on a useless and frivolous recall election.

The wailing of Democrats over the unnecessary spending of government funds is reserved only for those things they do not support. At the Federal level, this is particularly irritating as the Democrats nickel-and-dime things like the war in Iraq, while at the same time proposing social programs that would cost hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars.

There have been (I think) thirty-one attempts to recall a California governor in the past, including at least two against Ronald Reagan by liberal anti-Reagan groups. Although, unlike the Davis one, they didn't manage to get enough signatures on the petitions, not one liberal back in Reagan's day seemed concerned about what a recall election would cost, or that such an election would be "useless," "frivolous," or a "Democratic coup." The maximum of about $60 million quoted for the election is about six hours worth of the total annual California budget for the year.

Davis will lose if enough people vote against him in a legitimate recall election. If not, he won't. This is called "democracy." This is hardly a Republican "coup," unless all the voters are having their relatives secretly threatened by Republicans. Remember, a large chunk of people signing the petitions were Democrats. Davis wouldn't be losing sleep in a state with more Democrats than Republicans, unless he knew a lot of Democrats were just as sick of him as the Republicans are.

As always in California, as shown in the history of several propositions here, the "will of the people" is respected by the Democratic Party only so long as it marches in lockstep with their own agenda.

I personally think Tom McClintock is a better choice than Arnold, but I doubt he will get anywhere close.
