The Left has a blind spot in this area that is very difficult to get past. When you consider the roots of the Leftist philosophy, I suppose it's understandable. You might make some progress with liberals and more moderate folks.
I still find it disturbing that I can't throw a rock without hitting an apologist for socialism--and this is in the United States.
This book, written in France, is a good start.
