Back in the 1930s, well meaning people planted kudzu all over the South. It was a fast-growing vine and they hoped it would reduce erosion. Well, they certainly got the fast-growing part right. The vines grew like crazy, often choking out native plant species. Tons of money has been spent to limit kudzu's damage.
Remember a year or so ago when the lungfish was discovered in some lakes? It was a non-native species that was an aggressive predator. It wiped out the native fish species and a lot of money was spent to wipe it out.
Go to islands like Guam and ask them about their brown snake problem. It's believed the snakes were brought there by ships. The snakes are wrecking havoc on the native bird species.
Releasing a non-native species into a habitat very often does a lot of environmental damage. Most of the time, it's a very bad idea.
