How I did it

I neglected to describe the equipment, and technique I used to make the video.

The telescope was an ETX90 with a 15mm eyepiece
The camera was a Sony Digital Video 8 DCR-TRV350.

I simply zoomed it out and pointed into the eyepiece and moved it around till I saw a small image of Mars, then carefully zoomed back in till the image was large enough to see detail. I had the focus on manual, but it didn't seem to mater how I focused it, it stayed in the slightly fuzzy focus I ended up with.

After recording for a while I brought the camera in and connected to my computer through fire-wire. I brought up Windows Movie Maker and captured the video and, edited it to get what you saw. One of the special effects was to run in slow motion. That helped a great deal because before that the motion was very jerky as I was holding the camera in my shaky old hands. I really need to get some sort of adaptor to attach the camera to the eyepiece.
