Actually the stock market is about all that is up. Oh, and productivity is up, which means Americans are working longer and harder for the same or less money. The jobs being created today seem to be limited to the service sector. The American economy is moving workers from the manufacturing (a high paying) sector to the service (a low paying )sector.
The problem not being addressed is the move to a global economy and global corporations that are no longer responsive to national governments and the restraints they could apply to strictly national companies.
The situation we see our national society facing is one very similar to one hundred years ago when we saw the movement from local companies to national ones. The unbridled monopolistic capitalism of the Fisks, Goulds, Carnegies and Rockerfellers caused government to react to protect the people be putting ant-trust legislation and other restrictions in place to save capitalism from its canabalistic urges.
Problem today is, there is not international structure to reign in the multi-national or global corporations of today. Only the super education of the American work force can buffer this movement, and it is a major threat for the future.
You doubt it? Walk into any Wal-mart and read the labels. Made in USA is no longer a factor. Look at our balance of payments if you delude yourself that our economy is doing well or improving. And I won't mention our growing national debt and the causes.
Sleep well, enjoy your tax cuts. Your grandkids will pay for them.
