Allende was in office for a grand total of three years, so never really had time to plunge his nation into the abyss that has been the universal fate of communist nations, although after nationalizing everything in sight and other similar moves, he was well on the way to shredding Chile's economic system.

This short regime allows socialists to fantasize about how wonderful life would certainly have been under his regime. "This time for sure, Rocky!"

Unfortunately, the thug who replaced him wasn't much of an improvement. Nor did the involvement of the CIA and others represent America's finest hour.
