It used to really tear into me about once a month, but the military had trained me to sleep in just about any position (or maybe I just did that myself). Anyway, I'm usually on my back, but laying on my left side helps a lot on those nasty nights.
Learned in the Infantry to sleep standing up -- as well as laying across a load of mortar rounds in a rumbling armored personnel carrier, on rocky ground during a tropical thunderstorm, squatting waist-deep in a rain-filled fox hole, or at a hot live-fire range awaiting my turn to shoot.
I notice they didn't have a listing for any of those -- but then the limited research was apparently done in a number of hotels, and they would likely gripe if someone started digging defensive positions in their floors.
Oh, well...
Cheers,
Dan
